Gurriers – Nothing Happens Twice
The band makes a specific effort to avoid creating the version of this song that would be played in the role of protest music. “Nothing Happens Twice”, which got it’s title and also it’s repetitive nature from Samuel Beckett’s play “Waiting for Godot”, quickly jumps into something much more contemporary (and a bit frightening): dead internet theory, or the idea that an increasing amount of what we are seeing on line is not being created by real humans. Dan Hoff growls the hook; “Nothing ever happens here… Nothing happens twice.” It sounds more like a diagnosis than a complaint.
It’s the third single from Nobody’s Coming To Save You, out September 25 on Play It Again Sam, following the title track, which we covered here as Nobody’s Coming To Save You (W21), and “Party Lines”. Guitars pushed further into distortion, the rhythm section holding a tighter, more agitated pocket than anything on Come And See, musically speaking the heaviest of the three. I enjoy how the songs avoid abstraction in their language. Lines about wanting an education and getting “fucked up by the man” sit right next to the internet-alienation stuff, so the song reads as one constant complaint about not having any real control. Whether that’s over your mind or the feed in front of you.
