Benny Sings – 22 Durnham Dew
Benny Sings follows Parachute (W26) with “22 Durnham Dew”, the title track from his new album out September 25 on Stones Throw. Where “Parachute” carried the weight of his mother’s depression under a disco arrangement, this one sits more plainly in the present: a song about settling into a new house and accepting that not everything about that life will be good.
The detail that makes it is his daughter. She was home sick from school, wandered into the studio while he was working on the idea, and told him to keep it. He asked if she wanted to sing it. One take later, the song had a different shape. That’s her voice you hear alongside his, and it’s not a gimmick, it changes what the lyric means. A line about letting someone cry and getting through it together lands differently coming from a kid than it would from Benny alone.
The album pulls together the singles he’s been releasing all year: Castle (W46, 2025), built around the literal rebuilding of his house; Real Person (W08), the Elijah Fox collaboration about the duality of love; and Parachute. What’s stood out across all three is how consistently he’s kept the frame the same, home, family, the ordinary weight of both. “22 Durnham Dew” fits right into that thread, just lighter on its feet.
