Fat Dog – Shit Love
Fat Dog have never done anything the easy way. The South London group built their name on chaotic live shows before there was much recorded music to point to, then backed it up in 2024 with debut album “WOOF”, a record that threw dance-punk and electronica into the same room and let them fight it out. Since then it’s been non-stop: a wedding in Vegas mid-tour, collective breakdowns in LA, four sets in 27 hours at Glastonbury. Now they’re back with “Shit Love”, the third single from second album “Cancel Me (I’m Tired)”, out October 2 on Domino Recording Co.
“Shit Love” is stabbing synths and manic vocals from frontman Joe Love, built around a rhythm that keeps threatening to fall apart without ever quite doing it. There’s an industrial edge to the production that suits the subject matter: Love has described the song as being about “two fucking insane people who argue constantly and they are world-enders every time”, and that suffocating back-and-forth comes through in how tightly wound the track is. Buried in the churn there’s a sax line cutting through the synths, a small, sharp detail that keeps the whole thing from tipping into pure noise.
I’ll be honest: the first two singles from this album, “Go Fuck Urself” and the title track, didn’t really land for me. This one does. Maybe it’s the tighter arrangement, maybe it’s just that the anger finally has somewhere specific to go. “Cancel Me (I’m Tired)” is shaping up as a ten-song record that pulls in addiction and family ties alongside a fair amount of brand-name absurdity, and if “Shit Love” is any indication, the band haven’t softened anything for album two.
