Ulrika Spacek – This Time I’m Present (fantasy of a broken heart remix)

Ulrika Spacek are reworking their album EXPO track by track for EXPO, REMIXED, due July 31st on Full Time Hobby, and this is fantasy of a broken heart’s take on “This Time I’m Present.” The full remix project also pulls in members of YHWH Nailgun, caroline, and Good Sad Happy Bad, plus Able Noise and more eaze. However, each remix was built from individual stems handed over to artists the band actually listens to, rather than a blanket commission.

The band has been upfront about why: “After a few months of having EXPO out, it felt like a good time to share the individual layers with other artists to see what they could build with our blocks of sound.” They call themselves an inward-looking band by nature, so handing pieces of their own record to outside artists was a deliberate change of pace rather than a routine remix-album exercise. What I find interesting is that this isn’t the kind of remix that flattens the original into something generic. Fantasy of a broken heart keeps the introspective pull of the source material while reshaping its texture into something rougher around the edges, organic sounds rubbing up against more angular production choices. It’s recognizably still the same song underneath, just refracted through someone else’s instincts.
