Swapmeet – 2 C U

Adelaide four-piece Swapmeet are back with “2 C U”, the third single from their debut album Mount Zero, due July 17 on Winspear. We’ve covered them twice already this year: I Know! (W09) and Sand (W17). The lineup remains Venus O’Broin, Maxwell Elphick, Joshua Doherty and Jack Medlyn, writing, recording, producing and engineering everything themselves, with Hamish Mitchell on mixing and Andre Eremin on mastering.

Where “Sand” sat in frustration and drift, “2 C U” moves in the opposite direction: urgency and pull. The lyrics circle around the act of getting somewhere fast, red lights in the rearview, hours of talking to yourself, sitting in a cold shower, the whole compulsive ritual of wanting to see someone again. A question painted over in black and grey that can’t be erased. A day in heaven that was enough, but only just. Elphick and O’Broin trade lead vocals, and the friction between the two voices carries some of that same push-pull: the countdown rhythm of “1 2 3 4” recurring as both structure and agitation. It’s the most propulsive of the three singles, which makes sense as a pre-album statement. Mount Zero is shaping up to be one of the more interesting debut albums of the summer.
