Afroham – Portrait of Self (feat. Dominick Giovanni)
Rotterdam producer Afroham is back on Melting Pot Music with “Portrait of Self”, a slow-burning rap track built around Texas-based MC Dominick Giovanni. We covered his previous single Coconut Water (W17) earlier this year, part of a planned run of singles across 2026, and this is the next step in that sequence.
The production here is mellow and unhurried, giving Giovanni room to work. Born in New York and raised in a military family that kept relocating, he brings that restlessness into verses that circle around ambition, identity and what it means to keep moving forward when the ground keeps shifting. There’s a specificity to it that keeps the track from drifting into generic introspection. Giovanni is also a fixture in the Chillhop world as both artist and behind-the-scenes presence, and he moonlights as a DJ and visual artist working in video and 3D animation, which is worth noting given that he’s colourblind. Afroham, for his part, takes his artist name from his surname and his hairdo, which tells you something about the lightness he brings to what could easily tip into self-seriousness.
The combination works. “Portrait of Self” is the kind of track that rewards a second listen more than a first.
