Lightning Bug – Song for a…

Lightning Bug has been a few different things over the years. It started as singer-songwriter Audrey Kang’s solo project, became a full band, and with the new EP In Between Things it’s back to being Kang’s alone. The last Lightning Bug record was No Paradise in 2024, a full-band effort. Since then, Kang moved from New York to LA, and “Song for a…” is the first proper statement from this new configuration.

The track was written and produced by Kang alongside co-producer and engineer Sam Robertson, with Ryan Richter adding electric guitar and effects. The whole EP was recorded across 4th Street Recording, C&C Music Factory, Conway Recording Studios, and IRL Studio, and mastered by Alec Ness. Kang describes the song as being about the jolt of falling in love, and specifically the zig-zagging between closeness and distance as you figure out how to let someone in without losing your footing. There’s real tension in that, and the track carries it without leaning too hard on any one mood.

What makes it work is how understated it stays. The production is blurry at the edges in a way that suits the subject, and Kang’s vocal sits in the mix. It doesn’t resolve neatly, which feels right for the material. Thin on obvious drama, heavy on feeling.

In Between Things arrives July 14 on In Real Life Music. The EP opens with “Feast”, which Kang shared as a demo last year to raise money for California wildfire recovery.
