FATHER JOHN MISTY – The Payoff
Father John Misty (Josh Tillman) has shared “The Payoff”, his second single of 2026 on Sub Pop. It follows “The Old Law” from January, which was previously known to fans as “God’s Trash” from the 2024 live sets. Both arrive after Mahashmashana (2024), his sixth album. There’s no indication yet whether these singles are building toward something or operating as standalone releases.
“The Payoff” was written and composed by Tillman, arranged by Drew Erickson, and co-produced by the two of them. Erickson, a frequent collaborator who has worked on Tillman’s past two albums and is known for his work with Lana Del Rey and Angel Olsen, mixed the track with Michael Harris at Fivestar Studios in Topanga, CA. Mastering by Adam Ayan.
The lyric runs as a kind of sales pitch from an unspecified operator: “Have I got a deal for you”, “a small cut ain’t bound to hurt”, the sophistication of the methods deliberately obscured. By the chorus the voice has shifted to the mark rather than the con man, waiting for a payoff that keeps being deferred. The outro lands on “there’s nothing you can do” repeated until it runs out of room. Whether it’s directed at a political base being strung along or something more personal is left open, which is typical of how Tillman tends to work. The track has a psych-rock edge, a heavy riff underneath the arrangement that gives it more muscle than his softer work. I find the combination of the slick pitch patter and that repeated closing line more unsettling than the production lets on at first.
