Ranting – Grumpy Custard
Ranting is a UK-based 3-piece band with Adam at the helm. “Grumpy Custard” came out of a grey January morning when he decided to channel a bad mood into something deliberately over-the-top. The song’s title is a phrase his partner uses when he’s in a funk, apparently reliable enough to produce a smile. The exercise worked: he felt better after writing it.
The track leans into melodrama on purpose, cataloguing a cascade of small domestic disasters and spiralling existential complaints with deadpan delivery. It’s self-deprecating without being precious, and the absurdist streak keeps it from tipping into actual misery. There’s something in the commitment to the bit that makes it work. For a release that started as a private coping mechanism, it travels well, and that’s why it’s here.
