Grove – BABYLON ROTTEN
Bristol producer Grove releases “BABYLON ROTTEN” as part of the three-track HYDRA EP, pulling no punches about systemic rot and corruption. The track runs at a heavy 70bpm with punk-infused industrial production, combining propulsive electro-punk with trippy dub elements. Michael Gianan’s guitar work adds texture throughout.
Grove samples Irish PM Thomas Gould speaking about Benjamin Netanyahu and references vigilante Luigi Mangione in lyrics that call out government corruption and what they describe as a deeper sickness in humanity.
The Hydra metaphor runs through the EP, referencing how Hercules needed help from Iolaus to defeat the many-headed beast by cauterising each wound to stop new heads from growing.
The EP follows two years of personal transformation for Grove, including physical recovery from knee surgery, strength training, and deeper engagement with activism. The production reflects this evolution, featuring collaborations with Bristol’s experimental jam scene: Michael Gianan on guitar for “BABYLON ROTTEN”, EJ:AKIN on vocals, and James Storm on saxophone for “BREAK A SWEAT”.
Grove describes these tracks as a warrior’s journey against apathy and a rallying cry to reclaim collective power. The HYDRA EP positions itself as a confrontation with colonial violence and government corruption through kinetic, ready-for-battle club music.
