Eaves Wilder – Everybody Talks

Eaves Wilder spent two years away from releasing music, and she’s come back swinging. “Everybody Talks” doesn’t ease you in. It hits immediately with driving rhythms and chant-like vocals that build until they’re almost overwhelming, which is precisely the point.

The song came from a weird moment on stage. Girls at the front kept talking through her set, loud enough that she could hear their conversation. What followed was something close to an out-of-body experience. Those voices stuck with her on the way home, mixing with every other intrusive thought until they became something she had to get out. She went straight to her shed, where she writes and arranges everything herself, working until dawn to capture that feeling of drowning in noise.

“When it feels like this rising waterline of punishing intrusive voices is up to your neck, and you’re trying to make yourself taller and taller, and shouting louder and louder, so you can keep your head up,” she explains.

The video puts her in festival crowds with headphones on, deadpan while chaos swirls around her. It’s pointed. Many of those venues are struggling with funding cuts, and she’s asking people to support The Music Venue Trust.

“I think we are generally at a point where everybody talks way too much, and most people need to literally shut the fuck up,” she says. “In the club, your favourite song is about to come on, the chorus is about to hit, and then some fucking idiot comes up behind you and chats your ear off, and you miss the drop.”

But it goes deeper than that. It’s about online noise, constant fighting, everyone wanting to hear themselves speak. Some days, it feels like there are too many voices in your head to get out from under. Wilder wanted something relentless, something that mirrors the overwhelming feeling that all this evokes right now. She nailed it.
