Hand Habits – Bluebird of Happiness

Hand Habits shares “Bluebird of Happiness”, the final single from Meg Duffy’s album “Blue Reminder” (Today, August 22 on Fat Possum Records). What started as a joke song around the house grew into something more substantial after Duffy researched the mythological significance of the bluebird symbol.

Phil Hartunian recorded the album in Los Angeles with co-producer Joseph Lorge. Duffy worked with collaborators including Alan Wyffels, Gregory Uhlmann, Olivia Kaplan, Blake Mills, Tim Carr, Daniel Aged, and Joshua Johnson and Anna Butterss of SML. The album was tracked mainly live, inspired by Duffy’s extensive touring experience both solo and as a member of Perfume Genius.

Duffy explains that despite usually avoiding sentimentality in songwriting, “Bluebird of Happiness” felt exciting to explore. The song maintains hopefulness while acknowledging that “this bluebird has definitely seen some things”, which comes through in the production approach.

“Blue Reminder” follows previous singles “Wheel of Change”, “Jasmine Blossoms”, and “Dead Rat”. Duffy’s approach to the album centered on playing live in a room with other musicians rather than building tracks in isolation.

Hand Habits supports the album with extensive touring: Japanese Breakfast dates this week, a headline North American run through fall, and European dates supporting Perfume Genius in October and November.
