Mark Pritchard & Thom Yorke – Gangsters

Electronic pioneer Mark Pritchard and Radiohead/The Smile frontman Thom Yorke have unveiled “Gangsters,” the third single from their forthcoming collaborative album, Tall Tales, which will be released on May 9th via Warp Records.

The track showcases Yorke’s distinctive vocals processed through pitch-shifting effects—giving them an oddly childlike quality—floating above Pritchard’s synth work. The production balances “squelchy and buoyant synths” with uptempo drums, creating what one might describe as a “smooth, techno-leaning cut” where electronic waves “come and go like the tide.” This ghostly, atmospheric approach continues the sonic palette established in their previous singles, “Back in the Game” and “This Conversation Is Missing Your Voice.”

What sets this project apart is the integral involvement of visual artist Jonathan Zawada, who functions as an unofficial “third member” of the collaboration. Zawada has directed, animated, and edited an entire feature film to accompany the album—a visual experience developed in tandem with the music over several years. The film reportedly juxtaposes “unsettlingly beautiful natural landscapes with the stark aesthetics of a dystopian world,” creating a visual counterpart to the themes explored in Yorke’s lyrics and Pritchard’s compositions.

This visual dimension will receive special treatment with a global cinema event scheduled for May 8th. Fans will be able to experience the full Tall Tales album alongside its accompanying film a day before the official release.

This collaboration continues the relationship between these two artists, following Pritchard’s 2011 remixes of Radiohead’s “Bloom.” Throughout his eclectic career spanning various projects (Reload, Link, and Global Communication with Tom Middleton), Pritchard has also remixed work by Aphex Twin, Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey, and Slowdive, establishing himself as a versatile figure in electronic music since the 1990s.
