Storefront Church – Melting Mirror
Storefront Church, the brainchild of Los Angeles-based musician Lukas Frank, enchants with “Melting Mirror,” the third single from his upcoming album, Ink & Oil, due on June 28. This track dives deep into Frank’s personal mythology, exploring his eerie connection to his deceased great uncle, Roger, who visited him in recurring nightmares.
The song opens with an intimate piano arrangement, setting a melancholic tone that swiftly ascends into a grand orchestral piece, blending lush strings and pianos that resonate with cinematic intensity. Frank’s yearning vocals draw comparisons to the emotional depth and poise of Thom Yorke, as he sings, “Face up to the glass / Tiger on the lash / His eyes on you / Fables of the past / The mirror’s melting fast / And so are you,” encapsulating the haunting visions that plague him.
The creative process behind Ink & Oil is deeply tied to Frank’s personal experiences and nightmares that began at the age of five. His uncle Roger, who mysteriously vanished from his cell while serving a desertion charge, left behind an indelible mark on Frank’s psyche. These vivid dreams, filled with surreal imagery and sensory manifestations, shaped the album’s narrative, transforming them from intrusions into integral elements of his story.
Following his debut album, As We Pass, which featured collaborations with Cole Smith of DIIV and Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab, Frank continues to push creative boundaries with Ink & Oil. “Melting Mirror” stands as a testament to his ability to merge personal history with expansive, orchestral soundscapes, creating a deeply affecting and immersive musical experience.
