1000 Rabbits – Rubik’s Cube
1000 Rabbits are back with “Rubik’s Cube”, their second single on Young following debut single “Virgin Soil” (W08). Where “Virgin Soil” was road-tested across fifty-odd London shows before it hit the studio, this one arrived faster: written in a single afternoon at Laura and River’s place, around a riff from vocalist River, with Paolo’s guitar part landing the chorus. The band describe the process as something that “seemed to flow out of us”.
The London five-piece — Laura on violin, Liv on synthesiser, Paolo on guitar, River on vocals, and Luke on drums, four of them originally connected through a music programme in Aldeburgh before relocating to London — call it their “James Bond song”, then immediately undercut the label by rebuilding it into something quite different. They put it plainly: “It has a similar danciness [to ‘Virgin Soil’], but energetically it feels like an inversion, with darker verses and bright releases in the chorus”. That inversion is the track’s most interesting quality. The structure resists the obvious move and pays off for it. Huw Stephens gave it its radio debut on BBC 6 Music. A sold-out Third Man Records headline appearance is already behind them, and a run of UK, European and festival dates — including Great Escape, Latitude and MOTH Club on June 30 — stretches ahead. Still early, still worth watching closely.
