sister. – Two Birds

New York indie outfit sister. has announced their sophomore album, “Two Birds,” which will be released on July 11th via Mtn Laurel Recording Co.. The title track is shared alongside the news. The announcement follows their earlier single, “Blood in the Vines,” which has already garnered critical recognition.

Initially formed by Hannah Pruzinsky and Ceci Sturman, who met as college roommates, sister. has expanded into a quartet with James Chrisman on guitar and Felix Walworth (also of Told Slant and Florist) on drums and keyboard. Their evolution follows their 2023 album “Abundance” and last year’s single “Colorado”.

“Two Birds” serves as the band’s musical and emotional milestone. The title track opens with soft drum hits and Pruzinsky’s unmistakable vocals, creating an expansive slowcore soundscape. Electric guitar weaves beneath jagged rhythms, complemented by flashes of gritty feedback, pitched synth, and understated vocal harmonies. This carefully constructed arrangement creates a sound that’s “as patient and open as the sky”, with Pruzinsky and Sturman singing in hushed harmonies over what’s been described as a “chiming, intimate fuzz-tapestry”.

What makes the song particularly poignant is its origin story. As Sturman explains: “Hannah and I wrote ‘Two Birds’ on the night we moved out of our old apartment to live apart from each other for the first time in 9 years. We tried to go to a friend’s birthday party and both cried too much so had to leave immediately and sit down in our packed up music room and create something to share.”
