Otala – Lord Only Knows Pt.1

London four-piece Otala are back with “Lord Only Knows Pt.1”, the second single from their upcoming EP Better Than The End, due 22 April. It follows their debut single “More Fire” (W12), which introduced the band — Oscar Thorpe on guitar and vocals, Rory Allen on bass, Charlotte Foulkes on sax, and Jacob Wing on drums — and made a strong case for a group that knows how to hold tension without forcing a release. This track does something similar, but the space between the notes has grown.

Recorded with Louis Milburn at Premises Studios and mastered by Shawn Joseph at Optimum Mastering — the same team as “More Fire”, the whole EP cut over a single weekend in January — “Lord Only Knows Pt.1” is built around a lyric that turns the same doubt over and over: holding out for something, holding out for nothing, waiting until the end. The ambiguity is the point. There’s no resolution on offer, just the loop of the question, which Thorpe delivers with enough control that it doesn’t tip into melodrama.

The arrangement is quiet by post-rock standards. Milburn’s production has the warmth that the band flagged themselves — there’s nothing harsh here, no moment where the track pushes for a climax it doesn’t earn. The “Pt.1” in the title signals that this is part of something larger, which fits the EP’s architecture: Otala are building outward carefully, piece by piece, rather than arriving all at once. It’s the kind of track that rewards a second listen more than a first. I’m glad they held back on the crescendo — the restraint is what makes it land.
