newhvn – Skin off the Bone

Dublin’s newhvn have been building their sound through years of European, UK and Asian touring — sharing stages with Touché Amoré and Trauma Ray along the way — and “Skin off the Bone” is the first single from their debut album Spring Time Blues, due in April on Faction Records. It was recorded with producer Tom Peters (Alpha Male Tea Party) at Black Bay Studios on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland: a remote enough location that the band themselves noted they “went to the edge of the world” to make it.

The track lands somewhere between post-rock, shoegaze and post-hardcore — wide-open in its dynamics, loud where it needs to be, with the kind of slow-build structure the band traces back to their instrumental roots. Spring Time Blues is a 10-track debut that adds more personal and emotional lyrical weight to that framework, citing Pinegrove and The War on Drugs as reference points for the record’s indie-rock reach. I wasn’t expecting the combination to work quite this well on a debut — there’s a confidence in the arrangement that usually takes longer to arrive. An extensive European headline tour runs from April through June.
