The 113 – Scour

Leeds post-punk group The 113 have announced their new EP The Hedonist, out April 17 via Launchpad+ and EMI North, and “Scour” is the lead single. If you’re not familiar with them yet, the short version: heavy guitars, fast rhythms, songs that work in a mosh pit and at the back of the room equally.

Frontman Jack Grant describes the song as “more atmospheric and dramatic, but still has the repetitive element that makes it The 113.” The subject is surveillance — the creeping accumulation of data on ordinary people. “Our entire communication history is kept and stored for years”, Grant says. “Things like ‘Find My Friends’, and recordings on personal CCTV and ring cameras of embarrassing moments that are now permanent. It’s all quite creepy really.” The whole EP runs on that anti-technology thread, raising questions about data, online worlds, and how they can be used against you.

The Hedonist was recorded at Eiger Studios in Leeds with producer Dom Richmond, who Grant credits with creating the right conditions for the sessions: “He created a nice relaxed environment, built on trust.” Mixing went to Daniel Fox of Gilla Band — a pairing that shows in the result. “Without giving him much prompt”, Grant explains, “he encapsulated what we were collectively thinking and just fucking did it — the combination of gritty, fucked-up and polished in a way the tracks hit you in the stomach.”
