VOV VOV! – Mr. Burns / Desert Land

Florentine psych-rockers VOV VOV! drop two new tracks—”Mr. Burns” and “Desert Land”—both born from studio improvisation sessions. The band (Francesca Contrino, Zoe Bertini, Giulio Da Rin, Giovanni Michelucci, Pier Paolo Giovacchini) recorded these live-feeling explorations after last year’s debut EP “Sunbathing in a Magnetic Field”.

“Mr. Burns” hits hard and straightforward, keeping its energy locked in until a brief descending climax breaks through mid-track. Then the initial drive returns and pushes through to the end. The lyrics sketch a stubborn character—iron-grey and obstinate—who keeps his ship wrecked for reasons only God knows.

“Desert Land” takes a different path. VOV VOV! step outside their usual genre, moving through grooves that recall funk and afrobeat. It’s a playful detour that shows the band’s range beyond the krautrock repetition and shoegaze dreaminess they explored on tracks like “Nancy’s Track” from their debut EP.

Giulio Da Rin mixed both tracks, with Niccolò Caldini handling the mastering. The recordings capture that thrilling, improvised sound—rough edges included—proving VOV VOV! know how to make lo-fi work in their favor.
