MEMORIALS – In The Weeds
MEMORIALS return with “In The Weeds”, their first new music since releasing Memorial Waterslides in 2024. The duo of Verity Susman (Electrelane) and Matthew Simms (Wire, It Hugs Back) weld together disparate influences of dub and folk into a surprisingly catchy pop song. This anarchic, eccentric track shouldn’t work but does.
Droney organs and dynamic rhythms meet funky drumming that recalls Can’s Jaki Liebezeit, with flowing, dubby production that navigates uncharted territory for the band. Susman handles keyboards, piano, and vocals while Simms plays guitar, bass, and drums, creating kaleidoscopic sound textures in their garden shed studio using analog equipment, especially reel-to-reel tape machines. This technique gives their songs a quality that stands apart from digital production.
The duo describe the track using sailing knots as metaphors: “an anchor hitch is an excellent knot to use for attaching an anchor line, and a sheet bend is quick and easy to tie, very useful for joining lines of different rigidity. If this helps just one person it will all have been worthwhile.” Released via Fire Records, “In The Weeds” arrives after their world tour supporting Stereolab across the USA.
MEMORIALS will release an ultra-limited 7-inch single on December 12 featuring two additional new songs not available anywhere else: “Cut Glass Hammer” and “Reasonably Invisible”. Only 250 copies will be hand-stamped and numbered, available directly from the band and select record stores. The duo’s new album is finished but not officially announced yet.
