The Twilight Sad – WAITING FOR THE PHONE CALL
The Twilight Sad return with “Waiting For The Phone Call”, their first new music in six years. The track features Robert Smith on guitar, continuing a long relationship between the Scottish duo and The Cure frontman. Smith has championed the band for years, taking them on tour repeatedly and covering their song “There’s A Girl In The Corner” back in 2015.
Now, a duo of James Graham and Andy MacFarlane, The Twilight Sad wrote “Waiting For The Phone Call” as Graham processed grief and mental illness. “I lost the person most important to me in one of the cruellest ways,” Graham says. “I’ve always used writing as a method of processing and coping with my emotions. My emotions became a problem and I couldn’t control them. Writing music with Andy, especially the past seven years, had been both the escape and the opportunity to process and try and make sense of life.”
The song starts with bouncy synth pop before exploding into guitar-driven catharsis. Smith’s guitar work stays subtle but adds weight to the crescendo. Mogwai’s Alex Mackay plays bass, both on the single and as The Twilight Sad’s touring bassist. David Jeans also contributed to the track. Released via Mogwai’s Rock Action label, the single hints at a full album expected in 2026.
The Twilight Sad will headline UK and European shows in April and May 2026 before joining The Cure for summer festivals. After nearly two decades since becoming a Stereogum Band To Watch, they’ve carved out their place as The Cure’s permanent touring partners and built a devoted following through intense live shows and emotionally raw albums like 2019’s “It Won/t Be Like This All The Time”.
