Marem Ladson – Cavity
Marem Ladson signed to Mtn Laurel Recording Co. and marked the occasion with “Cavity”
The Queens-based songwriter starts with a peculiar flex: she’s never had a cavity. From there, the song builds into something bigger, dealing with a relationship marked by absence and unanswered questions. Twenty-four years pass before two people cross paths on the same streets that one has always walked. The lyrics deal with resemblance and resentment in equal measure, particularly in lines about sharing the same smile and the weight someone wants to offload.
Ladson wrote the song with Charley Damski and Josh Block. She describes it as giving shape to emotions that stayed quiet too long, including anger, confusion, and grief. It’s also about not carrying shame that wasn’t hers to begin with.
The arrangement swells gradually. Ladson’s voice stays front and center while the band builds around her. Hakim’s piano work adds texture without competing for space. Graham’s bass and Gustin’s drums lock in to support the song’s slow build. Simon Lancelot mastered the final mix.
Ladson spent the past seven years touring with artists like Helado Negro and Squirrel Flower, following the release of her self-titled debut. She has released several EPs and singles during that time. Born and raised in Spain, she taught herself to play the guitar and now works out of Queens.
