Ratboys – Light Night Mountains All That
Julia Steiner nearly went insane making “Light Night Mountains All That,” and it shows in the best way. Ratboys spent time at Wisconsin’s Driftless Cabin wrestling with odd time signatures and unorthodox arrangements until they emerged with what Steiner calls their “wormhole jam.”
Chris Walla co-produced and plays piano on the six-minute track, which started as Steiner’s attempt to write “an ultra-high energy folk song, in the style of the Dodos’ Visiter.” The reference point makes sense—both bands understand how to make complexity feel natural. Guitarist Dave Sagan, drummer Marcus Nuccio, and bassist Sean Neumann maintain a frantic pace that supports Steiner’s vocals.
Lyrically, Steiner centred the song around “a fantastic, rural vision-quest where the days and nights blend and nothing is quite as it seems.” It’s psychedelic without being precious, grounded in the kind of specific imagery that makes abstract concepts tangible and relatable. The “extraterrestrial guitar bloops” mentioned in press materials aren’t gimmicky—they serve the song’s disorienting narrative.
“Light Night Mountains All That” marks Ratboys’ debut for New West Records and their first music since 2023’s acclaimed “The Window.” The new label deal comes with a massive 34-date North American tour starting in February 2026, suggesting bigger things ahead.
