james K – On God
“On God” might be the purest pop james K has ever made. The New York artist strips away some of her usual ambient textures, revealing icy guitar lines that recall The Cure sitting against chilled background swirls. Her voice carries the aching quality of Elizabeth Fraser, acting as an instrument that pierces through the mix with brief moments of clarity.
The track comes from “Friend,” an album written and produced between New York and Montreal studios with collaborators including Francis Latrielle, Ben Bondy, Patrick Holland, Hank Jackson, and Adam Feingold. While K’s previous work felt more exploratory – “Pet” like synth pop stretched in the sun, “Random Girl” as fractured post-industrial pop – “On God” shows her at her most confident and direct.
K’s production removes any sense of decay that marked her earlier hypnagogic pop, leaving the track sounding vibrant and immediate. The guitar work shimmers with reverb while maintaining sharp definition, creating space for her vocals to float above the mix. It’s a brilliant balance of icy precision and warm atmosphere.
Known for collaborations with Moin, Fergus Jones, Huerco S., Priori, Yves Tumor, Drew McDowall, and LEYA, K has built a reputation as a secret weapon in the indie underground. “On God” demonstrates why, showcasing her ability to craft hook-driven material without losing her experimental edge.
The song represents the most apparent divide yet between K’s ambient soundscaping and pop sensibilities. Where previous tracks blurred those lines, “On God” commits fully to melody and structure while maintaining her distinctive atmospheric touch. It’s weirded-out slacker rock that somehow feels both nostalgic and futuristic.
