King Hüsky – Don’t Let it Bring You Down
Vidar Landa, guitarist for Norwegian metal band Kvelertak, shares “Don’t Let it Bring You Down”, his latest King Hüsky single. It’s about as far from Kvelertak’s sound as possible: warm, shimmery indie-pop that draws from Teenage Fanclub’s playbook.
Landa follows his self-titled debut album from earlier this year with fuzzy, countrified twinkle-pop. The lyrics maintain some of Kvelertak’s world-weary attitude: he sings about not letting the world bring you down, while also wanting to smash his neighbour and hating the smell of other people. He delivers these thoughts gently over twee arrangements.
King Hüsky represents Landa’s complete musical opposite from his metal work. Where Kvelertak delivers aggressive Norwegian punk-metal, King Hüsky offers vaguely twee indie-pop that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Belle and Sebastian record. It’s an interesting, creative outlet that shows his range beyond heavy guitars.
The production keeps things warm and straightforward, letting Landa’s melodic sensibilities shine without unnecessary complications. “Don’t Let it Bring You Down”H continues the approach established on his debut – accessible indie-pop with just enough edge to keep things intriguing.
