Squid – Cro-Magnon Man

In what might be the most cheerful contemplation of humanity’s obsolescence ever recorded, Squid returns with “Cro-Magnon Man” – the final single from their upcoming album “Cowards” (dropped February 7th via Warp Records).

Following “Crispy Skin” (which The FADER helpfully described as “a surprisingly breezy song about cannibalism and moral cowardice”) and “Building 650,” this track features guitarist Louis Borlase on vocals, joined by Clarissa Connelly, Tony Njoku, and Rosa Brook.

The album, produced by Marta Salogni and Grace Banks with additional production by Dan Carey, promises nine distinct narratives exploring different representations of evil – because one approach to darkness just isn’t enough.

Blending everything from folk, psychedelia, jazz, and electronics, Squid has created something that bassist Laurie Nankivell suggests took “many years to develop a common musical language.” This might be the most polite way to describe the sound of five people trying to reinvent several genres simultaneously.
