bdrmm – Infinity Peaking
Infinity Peaking marks a bold evolution for Hull’s bdrmm, offering a darkly triumphant blend of shoegaze and electronica. This latest single, from their upcoming album Microtonic, encapsulates the band’s newfound creative freedom.
The track radiates a synth-driven, euphoric energy, underscored by Ryan Smith’s refrain, “And it feels like I’m losing my way.” The long, immersive midsection showcases their playful approach to studio work, where pedals become tools for discovery.
Written during a trip to Malaga, Smith cites the locale as a key influence on the track’s atmosphere, drawing parallels to The Durutti Column’s Hotel of the Lake, 1990. It’s a far cry from the bedroom-recording origins that shaped much of their earlier work, signaling a creative leap forward.
This shift is further explored on Microtonic, set for release on February 28th via Mogwai’s Rock Action Records. Inspired by their time supporting Daniel Avery and performing at Field Day, bdrmm have seamlessly integrated dance music elements into their sound. Recorded with longtime collaborator Alex Greaves, the album also features contributions from Sydney Minsky Sargeant of Working Men’s Club and Olivesque of Nightbus.
Ryan Smith reflects on this journey, sharing, “I felt very constrained writing a certain type of music to fit the genre [we were known for], but something lifted, and I felt freer to create what I want. What I seem to be doing at the moment is a lot of electronic music—taking influence from different spans of electronica, from dance music to ambient and more experimental sources.”
