CARIBOU – Volume
Caribou’s new single “Volume” is a pretty cool nod to electronic music history. Dan Snaith, the guy behind Caribou, has taken inspiration from the 1987 hit “Pump Up the Volume” by M|A|R|R|S. It’s not just a random choice – this song was Snaith’s first encounter with electronic music when he was a kid.
The track does a neat job of reworking the original. Snaith has kept some of the iconic samples from “Pump Up the Volume” but added his own twist to it.
The video for “Volume” is worth checking out too. It’s directed by Richard Kenworthy and it kind of mirrors the style of the original “Pump Up the Volume” video. Lots of quick cuts and stock footage – it really captures that late 80s/early 90s vibe.
This single follows a couple of other recent releases from Caribou – “Honey” and “Broke My Heart”.
For fans of electronic music “Volume” is definitely worth a listen. It’s a nice blend of nostalgia and Caribou’s signature sound. Even if you’re not familiar with the original “Pump Up the Volume”, there’s still plenty to enjoy in this track.
