Tiga – FRICTION

Montreal’s Tiga has been building toward HOTLIFE — his first album in a decade — through a string of singles, and “FRICTION” is the last of them before the album drops April 17 on Turbo Recordings and Secret City Records. It follows “ECSTACY SURROUNDS ME”, “SILK SCARF” with Fcukers, and “HOT WIFE” featuring Boys Noize. The album itself is a 12-tracker with additional appearances from Maara and MRD, and it’s been a long time coming: Turbo Recordings, which Tiga founded, helped launch Chromeo, Gesaffelstein, Duke Dumont, Charlotte de Witte and others — but Tiga’s own full-length output has been sparse for years.

“FRICTION” is a departure from the quick-fire hooks that tend to define his work. Co-written with Jesper Dahlbäck and Francis Latreille (aka Priori), with additional production from Patrick Holland, and mastered by Mike Marsh — it was made between Stockholm and Montreal, and you can feel the split. Slower, groove-driven, built around a central mantra about tension and needing attention, it positions dance music as a release valve for collective pressure rather than just a good time. Tiga puts it plainly: “Too much friction, too much tension… I need some of your attention”. What I find interesting is how patient the track stays — it doesn’t rush toward the drop, it just keeps moving. For someone known for pop-leaning instincts, the restraint is the point. We covered the previous single “SILK SCARF” feat. Fcukers back in W49.

The tour is already underway — Buenos Aires yesterday, São Paulo today, then a run through Europe and North America stretching well into autumn.
