Denzel Curry – THE SCYTHE (feat. TiaCorine & A$AP Ferg)
Denzel Curry has been everywhere lately — onstage with Fred again.. in New York, on tour supporting Deftones across the EU and UK, popping up on Knocked Loose’s “Hive Mind” and Maxo Kream’s “Fake Jeezy”. We covered the launch of The Scythe back in W04 with lead single “LIT EFFECT”. The crew — Curry, Bktherula, TiaCorine, Ferg (formerly A$AP) and Key Nyata — now drops their second single ahead of Strictly 4 The Scythe, out March 6 via Loma Vista Recordings.
“THE SCYTHE” is the title track, and a step up from “LIT EFFECT” in terms of sheer firepower. Production here comes from BEAUTIFULMVN, POSHstronaut and DJ Qeys — scratched-up, ominous, built around a chant-driven hook that leaves no ambiguity about the crew’s intentions. TiaCorine opens with a feisty, icy verse that she almost had to fight for: “Denzel really showed me the power of production and trust”, she explains. “My verse was for a wholeeee different beat and Denzel is like, you gotta start doing bigger sounds, trust me. So that’s what I did and that’s how we got ‘The Scythe.'” Ferg goes next, recorded straight off the energy from his first ever art show. “Taking that energy from the success of my show back to the booth where there was more energy with The Scythe created not only a monster of an anthem, but a moment in history”, he says. Curry closes it out with his Robin Hood flip — taking from the rich, giving to himself, calling it Ultraground business.
The collective’s concept pulls from Curry’s foundational years while reaching back to the regional Southern sounds that shaped him — Memphis, Houston, Miami. It’s not nostalgia exactly; it’s more like a deliberate grounding. “The Scythe is a family and a group”, Curry says. “We still have our respective solo careers, but when we come together, it’s The Scythe”. The video, directed by Ramon Castellanos, captures that energy — three rappers and a crowd of friends going off in an abandoned building.
