Lifeguard – Ultra Violence

Chicago trio Lifeguard announce “Ultra Violence” / “Appetite”, an 11-track maxi-single that rips through 13 minutes of music. Out April 9th on Matador Records, it continues the unstable ethos of their debut album “Ripped and Torn” from earlier this year, alternating high-velocity punk with surreal dub-inflected interludes.

Recorded at the band’s own Stulogulo studio by plugging straight into an 8-track machine, the maxi-single uses dub effects, dirty mixing pots, and Echoplexes. Kai Slater, Asher Case, and Isaac Lowenstein call it “fast and automatic music free from lingering, processing, over-thinking, or otherwise staving off release.”

The title track, “Ultra Violence,” is scratchy and caustic, showcasing the band’s spontaneous, deconstructive approach. They’ve been making music together since high school, drawing on punk, dub, power-pop, and experimental sounds, bringing them together in an explosive cacophony.

Lifeguard are currently on tour supporting Matador labelmates bar italia, with dates through the end of November including Brooklyn Paramount (with Horsegirl), Boston, Montreal, Toronto, Buffalo, and Woodstock. The “Ultra Violence” / “Appetite” 7-inch vinyl is available for pre-order through Matador until January 13th.
