Melody’s Echo Chamber – Eyes Closed
French artist Melody Prochet releases “Eyes Closed”, the latest single from her fourth album “Unclouded”, due December 5th via Domino. The track features Malcolm Catto, drummer for The Heliocentrics and collaborator with Madlib and DJ Shadow. His propulsive breakbeats push the song from psych and soul into krautrock territory.
“Eyes Closed” is the wildest and most playful track on “Unclouded”, showing Prochet’s avant-garde side and sculptural production approach. Catto’s neck-snapping breakbeat attaches to Prochet’s starry melodies and glimmering riffs, creating something surprisingly funky. At times it resembles a lost krautrock jam, both formless and endlessly engaging.
“My eyes are closed not in denial, but in devotion—to vibrant memories, to the complexity of human feelings, to seeing more deeply,” Prochet says. “It’s also driven by a resilient aesthetic that emphasizes the beauty of transient things and the bittersweet feeling of their impermanence.”
“Unclouded” features an impressive cast: Swedish producer Sven Wunder (Danny Brown) co-produced and contributed to writing. Josefin Runsteen handled strings, Dina Ögon’s Daniel Ögen played guitar, Love Orsan on bass, and Reine Fiske of Dungen laid down Johnny Marr-esque guitar parts. Leon Michels worked on album closer “Daisy”, with El Michels Affair’s Grammy-winning mixer Jens Jungkurth bringing everything together.
Prochet describes her music as inhabiting “the liminal zone between realism and fables”.
“Unclouded” celebrates the present moment after her acclaimed comeback tour in 2022.
