U.S. Girls – Running Errands (Yesterday)
Toronto-based artist Meg Remy marks ten years with 4AD by releasing two versions of “Running Errands,” celebrating the evolution of U.S. Girls from the loop-driven “Half Free” in 2015 to this year’s country-soul album “Scratch It.”
Remy calls the project a “musical ouroboros experiment,” releasing both “Yesterday” and “Today” versions simultaneously to show how the same song can exist in different forms. The “Yesterday” version, co-produced with Maximilian Turnbull, uses chopped samples and atmospheric textures that echo “Half Free’s” collage approach. The “Today” version was recorded with the “Scratch It” band in Nashville, featuring Dillon Watson on guitar, Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs) on bass, and Domo Donoho on drums.
Both versions interpolate Annette Snell’s “Footprints on My Mind,” a nearly forgotten Nashville soul track. Dorothea Paas provides backing vocals on both recordings. Remy has made a practice of translating sampled compositions into live band performances, and these two versions put that process on full display.
Remy brings the Nashville band to Europe and the UK for the second leg of the “Scratch It” tour, following US dates earlier this year that included opening for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in Queens.
