Dead Gowns – Everything You Wanted
Geneviève Beaudoin writes songs about failure and means it. Dead Gowns’ new double single “Everything You Wanted”/“Intention” doesn’t hide behind metaphors or clever wordplay. Beaudoin calls these “two songs about failure” straight up, which is refreshing honesty in a world of coded artist statements.
“Everything You Wanted” erupts with searing feedback and relentless drums from Colin Lester Fleming. Sam Kassirer handles synths and piano while Luke Kalloch anchors things on bass and baritone guitar. The production team of Kassirer and Fleming recorded it at Great North Sound Society, giving the track room to breathe between the intensity.
Lyrically, Beaudoin captures the push-pull of trying to give someone what they want while struggling to stay present in yourself. “Meet you in Vegas for the weekend / I can hardly stay present” hits different when delivered over grinding guitars. The repetition of “I wanna give you, give you / Everything you wanted” becomes both pledge and lament.
Tracks get added to the vinyl release of “It’s Summer, I Love You, and I’m Surrounded by Snow,” Beaudoin’s critically acclaimed debut from earlier this year.
