Arny Margret – Took the Train ’til the End – Alternative Version
Arny Margret stripped everything back for “Took the Train ’til the End – Alternative Version,” and the results prove that less can be more. The Icelandic singer-songwriter recorded this piano-led reinterpretation at Of Monsters and Men’s studio, playing all instruments herself with co-production from Bjarni Þór Jensson.
Where the original featured banjo and fuller arrangements, this alternative version becomes a quiet reflection on worth and letting go. Margret’s vocals take centre stage over rolling piano lines, creating space between each note that invites listeners deeper into the song’s emotional core. The stripped-back approach reveals new layers in material that was already rich with imagery.
“Took the Train ’til the End – Alternative Version” comes from “I Miss You, I Do: The Sjaumst Edition,” a deluxe version of her March 2025 album. Margret wanted to make piano versions of selected tracks, then realised she could push further while maintaining her identity. Recording at the Of Monsters and Men studio gave her complete control over every sound—something she’s particularly proud of.
The alternative version fits into Margret’s broader artistic evolution from the minimalist folk of her 2022 debut toward richer, more collaborative sounds. However, these piano reinterpretations bring things full circle, focusing on the resonance of the keys and raw vocal vulnerability rather than the Americana palette of the entire album.
