bloodsports – Rot
bloodsports drop “Rot”, the final preview from their debut album “Anything Can Be A Hammer” before its October 17 release on Good English Records. The track starts quietly, building tension through calculated silence before erupting into jagged discord. Sam Murphy’s guitars churn alongside Jeremy Mock’s angular contributions, while Liv Eriksen’s bass and Scott Hale’s drums punch through the mix.
Murphy wrote “Rot” about relationship breakdowns and self-justification. “It’s about someone who has ended a relationship, and trying to justify their behaviour that led to the split, blaming the other for mistakes they’ve made,” he explains. The song spirals into narcissistic delusion, climaxing with the screamed line “how can you smile, when god is my audience”.
The Brooklyn quartet has been refining their disjointed guitar sound since 2023, building a reputation in NYC’s DIY scene. Previous singles “Rosary” and “Calvin” showed their range from slow-building emotional payoffs to blistering urgency. They’re celebrating the album release with a Stereogum-presented show at Union Pool on October 18, featuring Venus Twins, Vangas, and a DJ set from Shower Curtain.
