Ego Ella May – What We Do
Ego Ella May wrote “What We Do” while missing her partner during recording sessions at Real World Studios in Bath. The British-Nigerian artist was working on her sophomore album with her band when homesickness struck, inspiring this breezy love song that captures the excitement of reunion.
Co-produced with South London multi-instrumentalist Wu-Lu, who also contributes vocals at the track’s end, “What We Do” shows a different side of May’s artistry. She admits she doesn’t usually write groovy, fun songs, but Wu-Lu’s distinctive production style opened her up to creating what she calls “a banger.” His work on Greentea Peng’s “TELL DEM IT’S SUNNY” shows his range with soulful, groove-heavy arrangements.
The song rides on Latin-tinged guitars, softly syncopated drums, and beautifully stacked vocals that feel both claustrophobic and warm. May’s approach bridges old and new soul traditions, creating music that feels timeless rather than trendy. Her raw blend of jazz, soul, and R&B continues the trajectory from her 2020 debut “Honey For Wounds” and last year’s “fieldnotes: complete” collection.
“It’s got this carefree, fun, riding-with-the-top-down type energy,” May explains. The subject stays light to match the music’s feel. Wu-Lu’s influence pushed her into new territory while keeping her distinctive voice intact.
The track announces May’s second album, due early next year via Believe UK.
