GANS – NIGHTWALKING

GANS pivot hard on “NIGHTWALKING”, ditching the heated post-punk of earlier singles for something entirely different. Birmingham duo Euan Woodman and Thomas Rhodes team up with producer Ross Orton to create what they call “our version of a soul track with a dark twist”.

The track tackles the messy space between love, desire, and lust without sanitising any of it. Woodman’s vocals sit over warm production that deliberately swings, enhanced by brass sections from Ibibio Sound Machine. It’s a deliberate shift from the “darting electronics” of previous releases like “I THINK I LIKE YOU” and “IT’S JUST LIFE”, both BBC 6 Music playlist additions.

Ross Orton’s production gives the track room to breathe while maintaining that Birmingham grit. The duo’s Black Country upbringing, parents working in factories and mills, seeps into their approach of mixing “uneasy realism with horizon-chasing escapism.” Woodman describes the vibe as “like a Grand Theft Auto late-night cruise with Marvin Gaye driving through the streets of Digbeth.”

“NIGHTWALKING” previews their debut album “GOOD FOR THE SOUL”, due September 19th via Peter Doherty’s Strap Originals label. The record tackles acceptance, self-destruction, and body image across tracks written during a 10-day cottage retreat in Wales. For a band that calls itself “borderless noise-makers,” this shows they’re serious about not getting boxed in.
