Droogie Otis, Madlib & Your Old Droog – The Edge ft. Killer Mike
Madlib and Your Old Droog reunite as Droogie Otis for “The Edge”, bringing Killer Mike along for what amounts to elite-level hip-hop craftsmanship. The beat came together from necessity – it was among the first Madlib sent out after losing his home, decades of music, and equipment in the 2025 Altadena fires.
Droog knocked out his verse in 20 minutes, but it doesn’t sound rushed. Jazz-infused horns swell over dusty drums while a minimal bass line anchors everything. Droog even adds a guitar solo, proving his musical range extends beyond rapping. Killer Mike delivers his usual wordplay, creating what Droog calls “a sparring match between two elite lyricists.”
The production feels both urgent and laid-back, classic Madlib territory. Horn sections blast through the mix while maintaining that signature dusty groove. Beat Konducta continues to prove why he’s considered one of the greatest producers working today, especially when collaborating with rappers who understand his aesthetic.
“The Edge” previews an October Droogie Otis project that also features previous collaborations with Boldy James (“Everything Designer”) and Black Thought (“REEKYOD”). Each track showcases killer guests, suggesting this album will be worth the wait. For Your Old Droog, it represents exactly what he dreamed of making – elevated hip-hop that feels like “a suit-and-tie affair.”
