Big Thief – Los Angeles

Two new tracks from ‘Double Infinity’ that sound like classic Big Thief. They take messy emotions and make them sound natural. ‘Los Angeles’ handles the awkward territory of exes staying friends. ‘Grandmother’ brings in ambient legend Laraaji to process family trauma through zither and vocals.

‘Los Angeles’ might be the most honest song about Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek’s friendship after their divorce. “I’ll follow you forever / Even without looking / You call, we come together” nails that strange space where romantic love changes shape but doesn’t vanish. Lenker started writing it years ago but got stuck on the third verse. Only when all three members worked together did they finish the story.

The ‘Double Infinity’ sessions sound chaotic in the best way—nine hours daily with friends coming and going, improvising arrangements, making discoveries. No overdubs. Just live captures of whatever happened in that room. ‘Grandmother’ was their first song as a trio after Max Oleartchik left, turning generational pain into what Lenker calls “rock and roll.”
