Prewn – System

When someone describes their new work as coming from a “more self-centred place,” you know you’re in for something raw. Izzy Hagerup’s second album under the Prewn name arrives with that kind of unflinching honesty, and the title track ‘System’ serves as a perfect introduction to this internal landscape.

The song opens with strings, more warning than welcome, sawing back and forth with an almost mechanical persistence.Hagerup’s voice enters this space like someone speaking to himself in an empty room, admitting defeat to familiar demons. “I don’t know how to move, I’m giving into the fear again.”

The driving force behind ‘System’ is not just being brutally honest, but the cyclical attribute that defines mental health issues indeed. As soon as the listener thinks that they have nailed the mood in ‘System,’ everything turns upside down.

The approach is remarkably distinct. It almost feels like conversational, with secrets being shared rather than songs being sung. This sort of intimacy made her debut in 2023, ‘Through the Window,” such a striking arrival, and it continues to define her work here.

‘System’ works because it doesn’t pretend that acknowledging your patterns makes them disappear. Instead, it suggests that recognition might be the first step toward something different. In a musical landscape often obsessed with resolution, Hagerup offers something more honest: the ongoing work of understanding yourself.
