Geese – Taxes
Geese from Brooklyn turns tax anxiety into brilliant song on ‘Taxes’, the opening track to their forthcoming third LP ‘Getting Killed’. What originally was an existential crisis for Cameron Winter, ‘I should burn in hell/but I don’t deserve this’, became something surprising and brilliant when he dubbed tax evasion as modern sacrifice: ‘If you want me to pay my taxes/You better come over with a crucifix.’
Kenneth Blume’s production frames recurrent percussions and spooky backing vocals against acoustic strumming that dissolve the tension entirely. But the real magic here occurs as Winter declares, “You’re gonna have to nail me down”.
Geese here manage to produce a poetic narrative that turns bureaucratic horror into something closer to the holy in under three minutes.
