Ganser – Discount Diamonds
‘Discount Diamonds’ by Ganser sounds like an interrogation on the dance floor, every beat ending in a question mark. Alicia Gaines’ vision encapsulates that strange modern anxiety of today, where everything from dancing can feel like it might be breaking some unspoken rule. The track retains the post-punk footing Ganser is known for, but introduces these almost dance elements that are on the verge of being inviting and off-kilter. It’s the sound of a party everyone’s waiting for someone to pull the plug on, yet no one stops moving.
Gaines talking about the song as “a bit of a piss-take” shows the band’s ability to send up authority while still making you want to jig your feet. There’s something wonderfully subversive about creating a dance track that questions whether it should even be made.
Recorded at Animal Hospital, slated to be released on August 29 via Felte Records as the follow-up to their Essential Track-worthy ‘Black Sand’ single from last year’s ‘Better Human’ full-length and ‘Just Look at That Sky’ LP from 2020.
