John Maus – Because We Built It
John Maus returns with ‘Because We Built It’, the opening track from his forthcoming album ‘Later Than You Think’, arriving September 26th via YOUNG. After a decade-long hiatus, the philosopher pop star delivers a politically charged and hypnotic meditation on collective responsibility. The track builds around a repetitive bassline while Maus intones, “Because we built it/We can watch it go up in flames” – a stark acknowledgment of humanity’s complicity in destructive systems paired with dreams of their demise.
True to form, Maus transforms academic rigour into accessible synth-pop philosophy. His CalArts experimental music degree and political science PhD aren’t just credentials here, they’re creative fuel for examining how societies construct their downfall. The production maintains his signature lo-fi aesthetic while exploring grief, justice, and radical transformation themes. Where his previous single ‘I Hate Antichrist’ positioned him in spiritual confrontation, this new offering charts a path toward reckoning and reconstruction.
