Sydney Minsky Sargeant – I Don’t Wanna

Working Men’s Club’s Sydney Minsky Sargeant steps away from the dancefloor mayhem to deliver something considerably more intimate with ‘I Don’t Wanna’, the lead single from his upcoming solo debut Lunga. Where his main project thrives on pulsing beats and post-punk energy, this venture takes a different route entirely – one paved with acoustic guitars and softer synthesizers.

The track opens with stripped-down guitar work that gradually welcomes subtle electronic textures. Sargeant’s vocals carry the weight of the song’s central confession: “If loving this is wrong then I don’t wanna be right.” The production co-helmed with Alex Greaves maintains delicate restraint throughout, allowing space for contemplation.

Lunga, arriving September 12 via Domino, spans songs written across several years, some dating back to Sargeant’s teenage days. The album represents what he describes as wearing his “heart-on-my-sleeve a bit more” and the title itself serves as his reminder that “we are all one and the same deep down” in an increasingly fractured world.

‘I Don’t Wanna’ functions as personal revelation and gentle plea for connection. The minimalist arrangement serves the song’s emotional core without unnecessary embellishment. Sargeant’s approach favors intimacy over the grandiose gestures that typically mark solo departures from established bands.

The song emerges from what Sargeant calls “a search for meaning and understanding”, an attempt to make sense of relationships and emotions that previously remained unexpressed. His solo work exists alongside continued commitments to Working Men’s Club and collaborations with Daniel Avery and Ghost Culture in Demise Of Love, suggesting an artist comfortable exploring multiple creative outlets without abandoning his primary vessel.
