Obongjayar – Jellyfish
Nigerian-born, London-based artist Obongjayar returns with “Jellyfish”, a fiery political statement that serves as the latest single from his upcoming second album, PARADISE NOW, which will be released on May 30th via September Recordings.
True to its title, “Jellyfish” directly targets what Obongjayar perceives as spineless politicians—those who appear engineered to blindly follow the directives of their mighty overlords, whether oligarchs, media moguls, or foreign interests. The marine metaphor proves particularly apt, as jellyfish are notorious for lacking backbones while still possessing a powerful sting.
In an interview with The Observer, Obongjayar elaborated on the track’s inspiration: “Seeing how governments move, people in power, corporations – [for] whatever monetary reasons you sell yourself.” This frustration with political leadership and corporate influence drives the song’s raw energy and uncompromising critique.
“Jellyfish” follows previously released singles “Sweet Danger”, “Not in Surrender”, and “Just My Luck”, all of which feature on “PARADISE NOW”. The forthcoming album promises to be a bold, emotional exploration, covering everything from self-doubt to late-night highs. Produced across London and Los Angeles with Kwes Darko, Yeti Beats (Doja Cat), and Beach Noise (Kendrick Lamar, Baby Keem), the album includes just one guest appearance—his longtime friend Little Simz on the track “Talk Olympics”.
