Wretch 32 – Black and British (feat. Little Simz and Benjamin AD)
North London icon Wretch 32 delivers a powerful statement with “Black and British”, featuring Mercury Prize winner Little Simz and rising talent Benjamin A.D. Released during Black History Month, the track weaves personal narratives with broader social commentary, creating a meaningful dialogue about identity and heritage.
The WAVSDNTDIE-produced track incorporates a sample of Wretch’s grandmother Beverley Scott, taken from the 1988 documentary “Scenes From The Farm” about the Broadwater Farm estate. Her voice adds historical weight to lyrics that explore intergenerational experiences: “Granny came here to build a future, it was based on pure hope, but the road weren’t paved with gold it was paved with ‘go home’”.
“Sometimes you’re a fly on the wall in your own house or an ear to the wall for your neighbours, both views represent the black British experience”, Wretch explains. Little Simz praises his “unmatched storytelling”, while Benjamin A.D. notes the track’s increasing relevance: “The craziest thing is the song has been there for a while and now that it’s being released, it feels more relevant than ever”.
